One thing you should know when considering your options for dresses is the purpose they are designed for. Different lengths and different colors are suitable for specific occasions. For example, pastel colored short or cocktail dresses are best for informal day events. Longer dresses of this range colors are for informal evening gatherings. On the other hand, darker cocktail dresses are for semi-formal evening events while gowns of the darker hue are for formal and black tie social gatherings.
Weddings that are held in the evening can be compared to prom nights and galas. Dresses that resemble prom dresses can actually be used for weddings. If you are a teenager, then you could attend a wedding with just as much glamour as a sophisticated woman in her twenties. Some prom dresses are even prettier than their more mature counterparts.
What distinguishes prom dresses from women’s dresses are the fun yet elegant character of the design. There are plenty of colors, jewels, textures, and designs to choose from. Furthermore, the quirky designs bring out the youthfulness of the wearer. They are stunningly eclectic and full of youthful exuberance.

Mermaid dresses are long gowns characterized by a snug fit from the shoulders to the thigh. The rest of the gown flares down to the floor to emphasize the hourglass silhouette it creates. These dresses are normally floor length to maximize the visual illusion that the proportions provide, although there are some designers and clothing lines that use it for shorter dresses.

What makes this cut distinct is the flare at the bottom which resembles a mermaid’s tail. If you look at the the shape closely, you will see a silhouette resembling a mermaid’s torso and tail. Pretty sultry, right?

These dresses came into fashion in the 1960′s and were typically worn with long gloves during prom. So if you want to bring that retro vibe into your wedding party dress, choose one in a vibrant color. Further, this cut looks better when it shows off the chest, shoulders, and arms. Thus, strapless and sweetheart necklines work best with it. You can also accentuate the tiny waist it gives you by adding a striking detail such as a lace or stone belt or sequin embroidery like the one below.

This type of gown is suitable for ultra formal evening weddings, so don’t make the mistake of wearing it for afternoon or day weddings or weddings with a semi-formal dress code unless you want to outshine the bride.
